Evoquemment baptisé « tête de marteau », le prototype du drone du constructeur italien Piaggio P.1HH ou HammerHead a réalisé son premier vol fin décembre 2014 sur la base aérienne de Trapani, marquant le début d'une campagne de de certification en vol du drone.
Ce premier vol a été effectué au dessus de la méditerranée « à une vitesse et une altitude importantes » indique le communiqué de presse.
Dévoilé au dernier salon du Bourget à Paris en 2013, le HammerHead est un drone MALE (Moyenne altitude longue endurance) de la gamme des 6 tonnes, destiné à réaliser des missions de surveillance et reconnaissance. Basé sur une plateforme habitée (P.180 Avanti 2), il serait capable d'atteindre une vitesse de Mach 0.7 grâce a ses turbo-propulseurs Pratt&Whitney PTA6-66B.

L'armée de l'air italienne a toujours soutenu ce projet de drone national, mais hésitait à en passer commande, c'est aujourd'hui chose faite.
Le HammerHead est derivé de la plateforme civile habitée et éprouvée P.180 Avanti, qui affiche au compteur déjà 800 000 heures de vol. Piaggio quant à lui va continuer la campagne de vol de son engin.
Ce drone de type MALE (Moyenne Altitude Longue Endurence), va donc rejoindre la flotte de Reaper américains mis en oeuvre par le 32° Stormo de l'Aeronautica Militare Italiana (AMI), peut-être pour lui succéder?
The Italian Air Force has become the first customer for the Piaggio Aero P.1HH HammerHead unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV), the company announced at IDEX 2015 in Abu Dhabi on 26 February.
In total the Italian Air Force has ordered six HammerHead UAVs, split into three unmanned aerial systems (UASs) comprising two of the P.180 Avanti business aircraft-based UAVs and a ground control station. The three HammerHead UAS sets are expected to be delivered to the air force in early 2016, the company stated.
"We are truly delighted about this decision," said Carlo Logli, CEO of Piaggio Aerospace. "It confirms the strong partnership we have with the Italian Air Force and showcases the P.1HH as one of the most advanced systems to enter the market."
The Chief of Staff of the Italian Air Force, Lieutenant General Pasquale Preziosa, was present at IDEX for the announcement.
Although the sensor package for the Italian UAVs has not been disclosed, they are intended to provide ISR capabilities. They will complement the service's existing ISR UAV fleet, which comprises five General Atomics RQ-1 Predators and six MQ-9 Reapers.
The company also announced that the first full prototype of the P.1HH HammerHead UAV made its first flight on 22 December. An unmanned version of the P.180 first flew in November 2013.
Known as Prototype 001, the first aircraft flew from the Trapani-Birgi military base in Sicily, performing a shakedown flight over the Mediterranean Sea at varying speeds and altitudes that also checked out the basic functions of its ground station.
Project pilot Sergio Paloni, who led the flight-test team, said, "We are very pleased with the result of the maiden flight. The aerial vehicle was seamlessly operated remotely, with no flaws experienced."
The successful first flight was a major milestone for Piaggio Aero. "You can run more risk with a manned flight; there is a pilot to take control if things go wrong," said Logli. "With unmanned, you need a greater level of maturity."
To provide that maturity Piaggio Aero undertook trials with the manned HammerHead Demo aircraft, which tested the air vehicle's systems in an Avanti converted to act as a testbed. The HammerHead Demo undertook between 40 and 50 flights in preparation for Prototype 001's maiden flight.
The first flight marks the start of an initial trials phase for the P.1HH, which is expected to total about 150 flight hours and is due to be completed in the summer. While the first flight was conducted under manual control via the P.1HH's datalink, the test team aims to begin automatic take-off and landing operations, as well as introduce an interim sensor capability in this first phase.
A second P.1HH prototype is due to join the test-fleet later this year. This will be used primarily to expand the capability into full autonomy and to test the mission systems.
Majority-owned by Abu Dhabi-based Mubadala, Piaggio Aero showed a full-scale mock-up of the P.1HH in the unmanned systems section of IDEX. The company is working closely with Selex ES to develop the P.1HH, with the Finmeccanica supplying the vehicle management and control system, datalink, and ground control station.
Piaggio Aero is also working with Abu Dhabi Autonomous Systems Investments (ADASI) on a manned maritime patrol aircraft (MPA) based on the Avanti.
The MPA features extended-span wings, foreplanes and tails, among other modifications. The first prototype of this variant is scheduled to fly in the third quarter of this year and may be ready to appear at the Dubai Air Show in November.
D'après une source du ministère colombien de la Défense contactée par Air & Cosmos, la FAC (Fuerza Aérea Colombiana) souhaiterait tester le drone MALE italien P.1HH Hammerhead. En fait, les Colombiens considéreraient l'UAV de Piaggio Aerospace parfaitement adapté à la surveillance aéroportée, notamment de leur zone économique exclusive (ZEE). Cette possibilité aurait été évoquée pour la première fois à l'occasion de la visite à Bogota d'une délégation de l'AMI (Aeronautica Militare Italiana) conduite par le Chef d'Etat Major italien, le général Pascale Preziosa, en octobre dernier. A cette même occasion, les Colombiens auraient manifesté également leur intérêt pour deux appareils de Alenia Aermacchi (groupe Finmeccanica), en l'occurrence le M-345 HET et le M-346. "Pour ce qui est de ce dernier appareil, il est probable que la FAC suive l'exemple du Chili: attendre les résultats de l'appel d'offres américain pour le futur avion d'entraînement avancé de l'US Air Force, dans le cadre duquel le M-346 est en lice avec d'autres concurrents."
